Note the two different closing times: the consulate's general office runs to 5:00 PM, but the consular counter closes at 4:00 PM. If you are coming in person for legalisation or a Thai-national service, the 4:00 PM cutoff is the one that applies to you.

Two things trip people up here. Ohio is not in this district despite being a Midwestern state — it belongs to New York. And Arkansas and Oklahoma are in it, even though they sit well to the south of the rest.

Do You Even Need a Visa?
For a normal holiday, no. US passport holders get a 60-day visa exemption on arrival, extendable by 30 days at a Thai immigration office inside Thailand.
You need this consulate when you want:
- A stay beyond 90 days total
- A Non-Immigrant visa — work, retirement, education, or marriage
- The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) for remote work
- Document legalisation for use in Thailand
- Thai passport, citizenship or civil-registration services

How to Apply
All standard visa applications go through thaievisa.go.th. Your passport never leaves your possession and the approved visa arrives as a PDF by email.
- Create an account — the activation link expires after 30 minutes.
- Fill in the form and select Chicago as your mission if you live in one of the fourteen states above.
- Upload passport, photo, accommodation and travel documents, and any financial evidence your visa type requires.
- Pay online.
- Wait for the emailed PDF, then print it and carry it with you.
You must be physically outside Thailand for the entire process, and you must apply through the mission covering where you genuinely live. Shopping between missions for a faster turnaround is a well-known cause of rejection.
Practical Notes
What each mission asks for is not identical. The portal is the same nationwide, but supporting-document expectations and how strictly they are applied vary between missions. Follow Chicago's own published requirements rather than advice written for a different consulate.
Honorary consulates cannot help with visas. Several Midwestern cities have a Thai honorary consul. In the United States they do not accept or issue visa applications — they assist Thai nationals and support trade links. Your application still goes through the e-Visa portal under Chicago.
Holiday closures run long. The consulate observes both Thai and US holidays, which clusters heavily around mid-April (Songkran) and late December.
