The Royal Thai Consulate-General in Frankfurt am Main (Königlich Thailändisches Generalkonsulat) is the Thai mission for five western and central German states: Hessen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland and Thüringen. If you live in one of them, your Thai visa is processed in Frankfurt, not by the Thai embassy (Thai Botschaft) in Berlin, even though you file everything online.
The state people get wrong is Thüringen. It is in the east, so applicants tend to assume Berlin, but the jurisdiction list published by the Embassy in Berlin puts Thüringen under Frankfurt. The second common mistake is in NRW: Thailand has an honorary consulate in Essen, but it is not one of the missions you can pick in the e-Visa system.

Which Areas This Mission Covers
Germany has three Thai career missions, and every one of the 16 federal states belongs to exactly one of them. When you register on the e-Visa portal you choose the mission for the state where you are registered (gemeldet), and the portal routes your file there.

Honorary consulates do not take visa files. The German Foreign Office lists Thai honorary consulates in Essen, Hamburg and Stuttgart. None of them is one of the three options above, so your visa never goes through them. For visas, only the state-to-mission table matters.
Do You Need a Visa?
For a normal holiday, no. German passport holders get a 30-day visa exemption on arrival under the rules in force since 15 September 2026 (Germany is on the 30-day list). You can extend once, by up to 30 days, at any Thai immigration office for 1,900 THB, which takes a stay to about 60 days in total. Three details matter under the new rules:
- The exemption covers tourism only. Business meetings or work are not allowed on it.
- Entries on the exemption over a land border are capped at twice per calendar year.
- If you entered before 15 September 2026, you keep the stay you were stamped for.
You need the Frankfurt consulate when you want:
- A stay longer than the exemption plus one extension, or a multiple-entry tourist visa
- A Non-Immigrant visa for work, business, study, retirement (O-A, O-X) or family
- The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), 180 days per entry
- Legalisation of documents for use in Thailand

How to Apply
Everything goes through thaievisa.go.th. The consulate states it accepts no paper applications.
- Create an account on the portal. Fill in the application in English.
- Choose "Royal Thai Consulate-General, Frankfurt" if you live in one of the five states above.
- Upload the base documents the consulate lists: a colour scan of your passport data page, a document showing where you currently live, a biometric photo taken in the last six months (appropriate clothing, no glasses), and for applicants under 18 a colour birth certificate.
- Upload the documents your visa category requires, then pay online.
- Wait for the decision by email. The consulate states 15 working days from payment, whatever your travel date.
Proof of residence depends on your nationality. Germans can use the front and back of the Personalausweis or a Meldebescheinigung. EU, EEA and Swiss nationals need a Meldebescheinigung not older than six months. Other nationals use their Aufenthaltstitel card or a Meldebescheinigung.
Stay in Germany while it is processed. The consulate says applicants must remain in Germany during processing because an interview can be required. You can apply at the earliest 90 days before arrival.
Urgency does not move you up the queue. Files are handled in order of the date and time the fee was paid. If the consulate asks for more documents, a fresh 15-working-day period starts once everything has arrived. The fee is not refunded under any circumstances.

The Frankfurt site does not publish a full fee table. The Embassy in Berlin links its fee announcement from its e-Visa page; it took effect on 15 July 2024 (read 16 September 2026):

Frankfurt's own DTV page states the same €350. The portal shows the amount you owe before you pay.
Practical Notes
DTV applicants: get your Führungszeugnis first. The consulate's DTV checklist asks for a police certificate from the Bundesamt für Justiz, not older than six months, plus proof of at least 500,000 THB (for example three months of bank statements, or a sponsor letter). Only residents of Germany can apply for a DTV through Frankfurt. Ordering the Führungszeugnis takes time, so do it before you open the application.
Email with your booking and reference numbers. When you write to the visa section about an existing application, the consulate asks you to include your e-Visa Booking Number and Reference Number. It also asks applicants not to email from GMX, Web.de or Telekom addresses because of delivery problems.
Phone in the afternoon. The consulate is open from 09:00, but phone enquiries are answered Monday to Friday from 14:00 to 17:00.
Check the holiday list. The consulate publishes its closure days for the year on its site under Feiertage. Look at it before you count 15 working days back from your flight.

The Royal Thai Consulate-General in Frankfurt am Main. NRW residents select Frankfurt in the e-Visa portal. The honorary consulate in Essen is not a visa option.
Does Thüringen belong to the Thai consulate in Frankfurt or the embassy in Berlin?
Frankfurt. The current list published by the Embassy in Berlin assigns Thüringen to the Consulate-General in Frankfurt, together with Hessen, NRW, Rheinland-Pfalz and Saarland.

How long does a Thai visa take at the Frankfurt consulate?
The consulate states 15 working days (Werktage) from payment of the fee, regardless of how soon you travel. If it asks for more documents, another 15 working days start once they arrive.
Can I apply for a Thai visa (Visum) in person at the consulate in Frankfurt?
No. All visa applications are filed online at thaievisa.go.th and the consulate does not accept paper applications. You may be called in for an interview, which is why you must stay in Germany while the file is processed.
