The Royal Thai Consulate-General in Guangzhou is Thailand's visa office for Guangdong and Hainan, and only those two provinces. Residents of Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Foshan, Zhuhai, Haikou and Sanya select Guangzhou in the Thai e-Visa system. Fujian and Guangxi, which many travel guides still put under Guangzhou, have their own Thai consulates in Xiamen and Nanning.
Officially opened on 12 February 1989, it has been at No. 36 Youhe Road in Haizhu District since 2014. Most Chinese holidaymakers will not need it: Chinese passports get 30 days visa-free in Thailand. You need the consulate for longer stays, Non-Immigrant visas, the DTV, or if you hold a foreign passport and live in Guangdong or Hainan.

Which Areas This Consulate Covers
The consulate's history page describes Guangdong and Hainan as "the jurisdiction of the Consulate-General", and its business-information menu has one section for each of those two provinces and nothing else.
That gives a short district but a very populous one. The full mainland split, according to each Thai mission's own site:

Hunan residents: you are not in Guangzhou's district. Changsha is closer to Guangzhou by high-speed rail, but Hunan belongs to the Kunming consulate.
Shenzhen and Hong Kong are handled separately. The Hong Kong consulate accepts only legal residents of Hong Kong and Macao. If you live in Shenzhen, even if you work across the border, you apply under Guangzhou.
Do You Need a Visa?
Chinese citizens: not for a holiday of up to 30 days. The Thailand-China mutual exemption agreement, in force since 1 March 2024, allows 30 days per entry and no more than 90 days in any 180-day period. The Thai exemption changes of 15 September 2026 did not alter it.
- You can extend once, by up to 30 days, at a Thai immigration office for 1,900 THB. See the visa exemption extension guide.
- The exemption is for tourism. Business, work and study need a visa.
- Carry evidence of funds: 20,000 THB per person or 40,000 THB per family.
- Complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (tdac.immigration.go.th) within three days before arrival.
Foreign residents of Guangdong and Hainan follow the rule for their own passport. Check it with the visa finder.
You need the consulate, through the e-Visa portal, for a Tourist Visa (60 days per entry), Non-Immigrant B, ED or O visas, the DTV, and SMART or LTR visas.
How to Apply
Every visa application for applicants in China is made online at thaievisa.go.th. The consulate's fee notice says so in its first remark, and the mainland missions have issued stickerless e-Visas since 27 September 2021.
- Register on thaievisa.go.th and choose your visa type.
- Select the Royal Thai Consulate-General, Guangzhou if you live in Guangdong or Hainan.
- Upload your passport page, photo and the documents listed for your category, including financial evidence for tourist visas.
- Pay online. Fees are not refunded.
- Print the approval email for the airline and Thai immigration.
DTV since 31 August 2026: add proof of permanent residence in your country of nationality or permanent residence, and a criminal record clearance from that country. This follows the notice published by the Royal Thai Embassy in Beijing for applicants in China.

Practical Notes
Use the visa line for visa questions. The consulate publishes a dedicated visa enquiry number (+86 20 8365 2906) and email ([email protected]), separate from the main switchboard. It does not publish a processing time, so allow three to four weeks.
The counter keeps short hours. The consular section takes applications from 09:00 to 11:30 and hands back documents from 16:30 to 17:00. That window serves legalisation and Thai-citizen services; visas themselves are online.
Chinese holidays close the office. The consulate closes on weekends and on both Thai and Chinese public holidays. It posts the year's list on its hours page ("Official Holidays for Year 2026"). Expect closures around National Day in early October.
Other Thai offices in the building. The Thai commercial section (Department of International Trade Promotion), agricultural office and Board of Investment staff also work from No. 36 Youhe Road.
