The Royal Thai Consulate-General in Osaka is the Thai visa office for people living in Kansai and Shikoku. Since 1 January 2025 it takes visa applications only through the Thai e-Visa portal, so nobody needs to bring a passport to its counter in the Bangkok Bank building in Chuo-ku. The consulate says an e-Visa filed through Osaka takes about 15 business days.
Japanese passport holders do not need a visa for a holiday of up to 30 days. The consulate is for longer stays, work, study, retirement and the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), and for foreign residents of Kansai and Shikoku whose passports need a visa.

Which Areas This Consulate Covers
The consulate's e-Visa notice addresses applicants "currently in Kansai and Shikoku". It does not publish a prefecture-by-prefecture list. Shikoku is Tokushima, Kagawa, Ehime and Kochi.

Okayama and Hiroshima are not Osaka's. Both are in the Chugoku region, which the Fukuoka consulate lists as its own. If you live in Mie or Fukui, which are sometimes counted as Kansai and sometimes not, email [email protected] before you apply, because the consulate's notice does not name them.
Do You Need a Visa?
Japanese citizens: not for tourism of up to 30 days. Japan is on Thailand's 30-day visa exemption list, in force since 15 September 2026 (it was 60 days before that date). The Osaka consulate's own site carries the announcement of the new rules.
- One extension of up to 30 days is available at a Thai immigration office for 1,900 THB, which gives about 60 days in total. See the visa exemption extension guide.
- The exemption is for tourism only. Business trips and work need a visa.
- Entries on the exemption over Thailand's land borders are limited to twice per calendar year.
- Immigration may ask to see 20,000 THB per person or 40,000 THB per family.
- File the Thailand Digital Arrival Card at tdac.immigration.go.th within three days before arrival.

How to Apply
- Register on thaievisa.go.th, choose your visa type and select the Royal Thai Consulate-General, Osaka.
- Upload clear JPEG or PDF files, each no larger than 3 MB.
- Pay by Visa or Mastercard only through the portal. The fee is not refundable.
- Wait about 15 business days. The approval arrives by email.
- Print the confirmation email. Airlines and Thai immigration may ask to see it.
Tourist visa documents (Osaka checklist)
- Passport biodata page and a photo taken within six months
- Proof of where you live: a driver's licence or My Number Card for Japanese citizens; a residence card valid for at least three more months for foreign residents
- E-ticket in and out of Thailand, and proof of accommodation
- Bank statements for the past three months showing at least 20,000 THB, issued within the last month
- If the statement is in a guardian's name, the balance must be at least 40,000 THB and you add an official document proving the relationship
The tourist visa allows 60 days per entry.
DTV documents (Osaka checklist)
Since 31 August 2026 the consulate requires two extra documents for the DTV: proof of permanent residence in the country where you apply, and a criminal record certificate from your country of nationality or permanent residence. Applications made before that date are assessed under the old list. In practice the Osaka checklist asks for:
- Proof of permanent residence: a certificate of residence or family register for Japanese citizens, proof of permanent residence in Japan for foreigners
- An e-ticket from Japan to Thailand
- Bank statements for three months with at least 500,000 THB, issued within one month
- For workcation: at least two of a certificate of employment with the company register (tokibotohon), an employment contract, or a portfolio
- A police clearance certificate. An applicant too young to obtain one submits proof of that restriction from the issuing authority
A foreign resident of Osaka on a work visa, without permanent residence, cannot use this route.

Practical Notes
Phone only in the late afternoon. The consulate answers its phones from 15:30 to 17:30. For visa questions, email [email protected].
Hours differ between pages. The consulate's contact page gives the counter as 09:30–11:30 and 13:30–15:30; its holiday page says the afternoon counter ends at 15:00. Arrive early if you need the counter for legalisation.
Legalisation and police clearance for use in Thailand are handled at the 4th-floor counter. The Thai investment (BOI) and commercial sections are on the 7th and 8th floors of the same building.
Closures. The consulate closes on weekends, public holidays and the days in its annual holiday notice. The 2026 list is posted on its holidays page.

Which areas does the Thai consulate in Osaka cover?
Kansai and Shikoku. Kyushu, Okinawa and the Chugoku region (including Okayama and Hiroshima) belong to the Fukuoka consulate. Residents of other regions use the Embassy in Tokyo.
