The Royal Thai Consulate-General in Kolkata is the Thai visa office for eastern India: West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It sits on the 19th floor of Acropolis Business Towers on Rajdanga Main Road. You do not hand in a passport there. Every visa is applied for online at thaievisa.go.th, and the consulate's counter only takes the fee payment.
For most Indian travellers the first question is whether a visa is needed at all. Since 15 September 2026, Indian passport holders can visit Thailand for up to 30 days without a visa, for tourism. The consulate's own e-Visa page still carries a note about the older 60-day exemption. That note is out of date: the 60-day scheme ended on 14 September 2026.

Which States This Consulate Covers
The consulate's jurisdiction page lists five states and one union territory. India is split between four Thai missions:

The north-eastern states are not on Kolkata's list. Assam, Sikkim, Meghalaya and the other north-eastern states appear on none of the three consulates' published lists, so by elimination they fall to New Delhi. If you live in the north-east, confirm with the embassy in New Delhi before you pay, because fees are not refunded if you choose the wrong mission.
Chhattisgarh is the other one to watch. It is a central state, but it belongs to Kolkata, not Mumbai or New Delhi.
Do You Need a Visa?
Indian citizens have been on Thailand's 30-day visa exemption list since 15 September 2026 (Royal Gazette, 31 August 2026). The exemption is for tourism.
- Extensions are short for Indians. The general rule is one extension of up to 30 days at a Thai immigration office for 1,900 THB. Immigration Division 1's published criteria cap tourism extensions at 7 days for Indian nationals, so plan on about 37 days in total. Confirm at the immigration counter. See visa exemption extension.
- Land-border entries on the exemption are capped at two per calendar year.
- Visa on Arrival is not available to Indians. Since 15 September 2026 it covers only Azerbaijan, Belarus and Serbia.
- File the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within 3 days before you arrive, and carry proof of funds (20,000 THB per person or 40,000 THB per family).

You need the consulate (through the e-Visa portal) for:
- A stay of more than about 37 days: a Tourist Visa gives 60 days per entry
- Business, work, study or family stays: Non-Immigrant B, ED or O
- The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)
- Legalisation of documents for use in Thailand
How to Apply
The consulate's e-Visa guidelines (13 January 2025) set out the steps:
- Apply at thaievisa.go.th. You can apply yourself, through a visa processing company (the consulate names BLS International, VFS Global and DU Digital), or through a travel agent.
- Choose the Royal Thai Consulate-General, Kolkata as the mission if you live in one of its six areas.
- Upload the documents the portal lists for your visa type, including proof that you live in the consulate's area.
- Pay within 14 days of submitting the complete application. The guidelines give two ways:
- At the consulate between 09:30 and 12:00: bring the Payment Info Summary and a bank demand draft payable to "Royal Thai Consulate-General".
- At a DBS Bank branch: pay by cash deposit slip into the consulate's current account (the account number and a sample slip are in the guidelines), write the applicant's name and passport number on the slip, then email the Payment Info Summary and slip to [email protected].
- Wait about 14 working days from the date the fee receipt is issued.
- Print the approved e-Visa and carry it with your passport.
One draft or slip per application. Fees are non-refundable.
Check the DBS option before you use it. The Chennai consulate stopped accepting DBS cash deposits on 20 May 2025 and does not refund deposits made after that date. Kolkata's guidelines still list DBS, and we found no notice withdrawing it, but a demand draft at the counter is the safer route. If in doubt, email the visa section first.
DTV applicants: since 31 August 2026 you must apply through the mission for your country of nationality or permanent residence and include a criminal record certificate. For an Indian citizen living in eastern India, that is Kolkata.

The Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi announced a new fee schedule effective 27 April 2026 "at the Royal Thai Embassy and the Royal Thai Consulates-General in India":

Read 27 Sep 2026. Kolkata's own consular fee page still shows the July 2024 schedule (tourist single entry INR 2,500). That schedule was replaced on 27 April 2026. The e-Visa portal's Payment Info Summary shows the amount actually due, so pay what it says.
Practical Notes
It is on the 19th floor of an office tower. The consulate is in Unit 20/2 of Acropolis Business Towers on Rajdanga Main Road. Allow time for building security.
Holiday lists are not current on the site. The consulate's working-hours page still shows its 2025 holiday list. That list closed the consulate on both Thai government holidays and West Bengal holidays (Durga Puja among them), and it gave a lunch break of 12:30 to 14:00. Call +91 33 2440 7836 before a counter visit.
Old notes linger. Both the e-Visa page and the guidelines PDF mention the 60-day exemption. Rely on the 30-day rule described above.
