The Royal Thai Embassy in Rome processes Thai visas for foreign nationals living in Italy, Cyprus, Albania, San Marino and Libya. That list comes from the embassy's own e-Visa page, and it means residents of Nicosia and Tirana file their Thai visa with Rome.
What applicants get wrong most often is small detail on the e-Visa form. The embassy keeps a whole page of common mistakes and says it cannot edit your personal details for you. One misspelt name or a photo cropped from your passport can mean a rejection, and the fee is not refunded.

Which Areas This Mission Covers
The embassy's e-Visa page says that "a foreign national, with a residence in Italy, Cyprus, Albania, San Marino and Libya, who wishes to apply for a Thai visa must apply" through the online system.

Residence is what counts, not nationality. An Italian living in Germany applies through the Thai mission covering their German state, such as the embassy in Berlin.
Malta is not on Rome's list. If you live in Malta, check with the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the e-Visa portal which mission handles Maltese residents before you apply. Vatican City is not on the list either.
Do You Need a Visa?
It depends on your passport.
Italians and Cypriots are in the 30-day visa exemption tier that took effect on 15 September 2026. For a holiday you get up to 30 days on arrival without applying for anything. The exemption is for tourism only.
- You can extend once, by up to 30 days, at any Thai immigration office for 1,900 THB. See the visa exemption extension guide.
- Land-border entries on the exemption are capped at two per calendar year.
- If you entered before 15 September 2026, your original stay stands.

Albania, San Marino and Libya are not on the 30-day list. If you hold one of those passports, check what applies to you with the embassy in Rome before you book.
Holders of Italian refugee travel documents must get a visa before travelling, according to the embassy's visa page.
You need the embassy, even with an exemption, for:
- Stays longer than 30 days plus one 30-day extension
- A Non-Immigrant O visa for family or retirement, or a B, ED or O-X visa
- The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)
- Legalisation of Italian documents
How to Apply
Rome has used the online system since November 2022. The embassy says that because all processes and payments are online, you do not submit a passport at the embassy.
- Register at thaievisa.go.th and select your country of residence. Our e-Visa guide covers the portal step by step.
- Apply at least 15 days before arrival and no earlier than 90 days before, as the embassy advises.
- Type your name exactly as it appears in the machine-readable zone of your passport, with every part of it and the spaces in the right place. Leave empty name fields blank rather than writing N/A, X or a dash.
- Upload a proper passport photo taken within six months, not a crop from your passport.
- Upload only the documents the form asks for, and pay online.
Money guideline. The embassy's common-mistakes page asks for evidence of at least EUR 550 per 30 days of stay and warns against statements showing unreasonable balances.
DTV applicants must show proof of permanent residence in the country where they apply, bank statements for the last three months with at least 500,000 THB or equivalent (or sponsorship letters), and a criminal record certificate issued within the last six months.

Practical Notes
Call in the afternoon. The main line takes phone enquiries only from 14:30 to 17:00. The consular section has its own numbers and works by appointment in the mornings.
Legalisation of Italian documents costs EUR 15 per stamp. The document must first be legalised by the competent Italian authority (Prefettura, Procura della Repubblica or Camera di Commercio). Translations into Thai are accepted directly from a court-registered translator; otherwise the document is translated into English, sworn before a court and legalised by the Procura della Repubblica first.
Holidays. The embassy publishes its own list of closure days. Check it before booking a consular appointment.
