The Royal Thai Embassy in Stockholm handles Thai visas for people who live in Sweden and Latvia. If you live in Riga, your e-Visa goes to Stockholm too: the embassy names Latvia in its own jurisdiction.
What trips up Swedish applicants is more mundane: the letters Å, Ä and Ö. The embassy says names must be typed in passport order with Å as AA, Ä as AE and Ö as OE, or the application is rejected. Its own example: Kåre Björknäs becomes KAARE BJOERKNAES.

Which Areas This Mission Covers
The embassy's rule is residence-based: a foreign national with a residence in Sweden or Latvia applies for a Thai visa through the e-Visa platform, with Stockholm as the mission. The applicant must have a current residency in one of those two countries. Nationality alone doesn't decide it.
Honorary consuls no longer issue visas. In an announcement dated 25 May 2021, the embassy said that from 28 May 2021 honorary consular officers, including the Royal Thai Honorary Consulate in Gothenburg, no longer have authority to issue visas or legalise documents. Visa and legalisation applications from residents of Sweden and Latvia go to the embassy in Stockholm.
Do You Need a Visa?
For a holiday, no. Swedish passport holders get a 30-day visa exemption on arrival under the rules in force since 15 September 2026. Latvia is on the same 30-day list. You can extend once, by up to 30 days, at a Thai immigration office for 1,900 THB, which gets you to about 60 days. The exemption is for tourism only, entries on it over a land border are limited to two per calendar year, and anyone who entered before 15 September 2026 keeps the stay they were granted. The embassy's homepage carries its own notice on the revised exemption and visa-on-arrival schemes effective 15 September 2026. Background: visa exemption and the September 2026 change.
You need the embassy when you want:
- A tourist visa, single or multiple entry, for a longer stay
- A Non-Immigrant visa for business, study, retirement (O-A, O-X) or family
- The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), valid five years
- Legalisation of documents for use in Thailand
See our Thailand visa guide for Swedish citizens, or run the visa finder.
How to Apply
- Create an account at thaievisa.go.th and log in.
- Enter your name exactly in the order shown in your passport, converting Å, Ä and Ö to AA, AE and OE.
- Select the Royal Thai Embassy, Stockholm, upload your documents and submit.
- Pay the visa fee through the portal. It is non-refundable.
- Once the embassy has your documents, processing takes 7 working days if the file is complete.
- When approved you get a confirmation email. The embassy asks you to print it and show it to the airline and to Thai immigration.
You no longer hand in your passport or original documents at the embassy.
Don't apply too early. The embassy asks applicants not to apply more than three months before the expected date of arrival in Thailand.
Non-Swedish passports may need extra paperwork. Holders of non-Swedish passports and travel documents, including a främlingspass, may have to submit other documents, even with Swedish permanent residence (uppehållstillstånd). The embassy lists 26 nationalities whose applicants may be asked for additional documents and an interview at the embassy.
