The Royal Thai Embassy in Budapest issues Thai e-Visas for residents of five countries: Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Kosovo. For most of the western Balkans, this is the Thai mission you apply to, even though it sits in Budapest's 12th district, a long way from Sarajevo or Podgorica.
Serbia is the exception people get wrong. It is not in Budapest's list. The Royal Thai Embassy in Athens names Serbia, together with Greece and Malta, as its visa district; see the Athens embassy page.

Which Areas This Mission Covers
The embassy's visa page lists its five countries and sets a residence test. Nationals of other countries are accepted only if they hold a valid residence permit or an officially registered address in one of the five, and they must attach a copy of an official document proving it, such as a Hungarian address card, when they submit the e-Visa. The Thai Foreign Ministry's list of mission contact points (December 2025) gives Budapest the same five countries.

Budapest also lists an honorary consul in Zagreb for Croatia. Honorary consuls do not issue Thai visas; Croatian residents still apply online to Budapest.
Do You Need a Visa?
It depends on your passport, and this district mixes very different rules.
- Hungary and Croatia: both are on Thailand's 30-day list. Since 15 September 2026, Hungarian and Croatian passport holders can enter visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism, with one extension of up to 30 days for 1,900 THB at a Thai immigration office (extension guide). Exemption entries over land borders are capped at twice per calendar year, and you need funds of 20,000 THB per person (40,000 THB per family).
- Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Kosovo: none of the three appears on the 30-day, 15-day, visa-on-arrival or bilateral lists in force since 15 September 2026. Plan on getting a visa through the e-Visa portal before you fly, and confirm with the embassy at [email protected] if you are unsure.
Anyone who entered Thailand before 15 September 2026 keeps the stay they were given. Everyone files the Thailand Digital Arrival Card within 3 days before arrival. Background: visa exemption, the 30-day rule change, or run the visa finder.
How to Apply
Budapest takes applications only through thaievisa.go.th. You don't send your passport or original documents.
- Create an account and choose the Royal Thai Embassy, Budapest.
- Enter your name, email and passport number carefully; they cannot be changed after submission.
- Upload every document in English (or Thai where relevant). That includes flight and hotel bookings, bank documents, letters and declarations.
- For connecting flights, give the number of the last flight that lands in Thailand.
- Pay in the system. The embassy says fees are "strictly non-refundable under any circumstances", including withdrawal.
Your passport needs at least 6 months' validity after your expected arrival. The embassy asks for applications at least 10 to 15 days before departure and says processing takes 5 to 15 working days, longer if it requests more documents or an interview. It also states that it has not authorised any agency to process Thai visas.

Fees do not include bank charges.
DTV applicants: since 31 August 2026, the Thai Foreign Ministry requires DTV applicants to apply where they are a national or permanent resident and to add a criminal record certificate. Under that rule, a temporary residence permit in Hungary or the Balkans is not enough on its own for a DTV filed with Budapest. See DTV application.
Practical Notes
Use the right inbox. Visa questions go to [email protected] (the Hungarian spelling). Thai passports, ID cards and legalisation go to [email protected].
Proof of address for non-Hungarians. If you are not a national of one of the five countries, the registered-address document is compulsory. An application without it falls outside the embassy's district.
