The Royal Thai Embassy in Kathmandu, on Bansbari Road in Maharajgunj, handles Thai visas for Nepali citizens and for foreigners in Nepal. Since 1 January 2025 you apply online at thaievisa.go.th. The one step that still happens in person is payment: Nepal has no online option yet, so you buy a manager's cheque at a Global IME Bank branch and hand it in at the embassy between 09:30 and 11:30. Processing only starts once the cheque is in.
Nepali passport holders should plan on needing a visa. Nepal is not on any of the exemption or visa-on-arrival lists in force since 15 September 2026. The exception is Nepali official passports, which the embassy says do not need a visa.

The embassy's visa page is written for "all Nepali and foreign nationals in Nepal applying for a Thai visa". It is the mission for:

Do You Need a Visa?
Nepali citizens with ordinary passports: plan on yes. The rules in force since 15 September 2026 (four Interior Ministry announcements in the Royal Gazette of 31 August 2026) give Nepal no visa-free route. It is not among the 60 countries with a 30-day exemption, it is not on the visa-on-arrival list (now Azerbaijan, Belarus and Serbia only), and it has no bilateral exemption for ordinary passports on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs list. Apply for an e-Visa before you travel.
Nepali official passports are visa-exempt, according to the embassy's visa page.
Extensions are short. Thai Immigration Division 1's criteria cap tourism extensions at 7 days for nine nationalities, Nepal among them. Ask for a visa that covers your whole stay.
Foreigners in Nepal follow the rules for their own passport. Most Western passports get 30 days visa-free since 15 September 2026; see visa exemption and the 30-day rule change.

The embassy's visa page does not list the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), and its fee schedule gives no DTV fee. Since 31 August 2026 DTV applicants apply through the mission for their country of nationality or permanent residence and add a criminal record certificate, so a Nepali citizen in Nepal would file under Kathmandu. Ask [email protected] before applying.
How to Apply
- Apply at thaievisa.go.th and select the Royal Thai Embassy, Kathmandu. You no longer hand in your passport or original documents.
- Check every detail before paying. The embassy warns that once payment is made, nothing can be changed. A misspelt name or wrong passport number means rejection.
- Deposit the fee at any Global IME Bank branch in the Kathmandu Valley and ask for a manager's cheque.
- Take the cheque to the embassy on a working day between 09:30 and 11:30.
- Check your email. The uploads are only for initial checks, and the embassy may ask for more documents or an interview.
- Print the approval email and show it to the airline and to Thai immigration on arrival.
Documents in Nepali
The embassy asks that documents written entirely in Nepali be translated into English and legalised by Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Documents in other languages need an English translation legalised by the embassy or consulate of the country that issued them. Allow time for this before you start the online form.
Timing
The embassy says it needs a minimum of 7 working days after the manager's cheque is submitted. It recommends applying at least a month before departure, but not more than 3 months before. It takes no responsibility if a visa is not ready in time.

Read 27 Sep 2026. This schedule predates the DTV, so it gives no DTV fee, and the embassy says fees "may be changed without prior notice". The amount on your e-Visa payment document is the one to pay. Fees are non-refundable.
Practical Notes
Remaining 2026 closures. The embassy's 2026 holiday list closes it on 13 October, 19 to 22 October (Dashain), 9 to 11 November (Tihar), 7 December and 31 December. Dashain and Tihar fall in the busy season for Thai travel, so hand in your cheque before them.
Weekends are Saturday and Sunday. The embassy's holiday notice lists both as weekly holidays, and it works Monday to Friday.
Long stays. The embassy reminds applicants that extensions and visa changes happen in Thailand at the Immigration Bureau (Government Center B, Chaengwattana Soi 7, Bangkok) or local immigration offices, at the officer's discretion.
Before you fly. Complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card within 3 days before arrival and carry proof of funds (20,000 THB per person or 40,000 THB per family). See financial requirements.
