Ubon Ratchathani Immigration (ตรวจคนเข้าเมืองจังหวัดอุบลราชธานี) is the immigration office for foreigners living in Ubon Ratchathani province, and it also runs the Chong Mek border crossing into southern Laos. Before you set off: the address on this page is the head office in Sirindhorn district, out by the Lao border and roughly 80 km from Ubon city. It is not the city counter. The office's own contact block lists its foreigner-services section (งานบริการคนต่างด้าว) separately, at Ubon Ratchathani Rajabhat University in the city, with its own phone number, 045-312-133. If you live in town and need an extension or a 90-day report, call that number first rather than driving to the border.

The office's history page explains the split. The provincial immigration office sat at 26 Sathit Nimankan Road in Phibun Mangsahan until 2015, when it moved to the current head office in Sirindhorn. The old Phibun site was kept for deportation work. The foreigner-services counter in the city is the one most residents will deal with: the office's monthly reports for 2026 describe extension checks carried out by the "foreigner services (sub-station)" staff on applicants living in Mueang Ubon and Warin Chamrap.
The website does not publish a street address or separate hours for the Rajabhat counter. Phone 045-312-133 to confirm where to go and what to bring before your first visit.
Services and What to Bring
Extension of a visa-exempt or tourist stay
The Immigration Bureau's published documents:
- Form TM.7, filed by you in person
- Copies of your passport photo page, visa (if any) and latest entry stamp
- One photo, 4 x 6 cm, taken within the last six months
- 1,900 THB fee
The Bureau caps this extension at 7 days for nationals of Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iran, Nepal, Togo, Nigeria and Uganda. Everyone else can get up to 30 days. See visa exemption extension. If you only need a few more weeks, an extension is often simpler than a trip to Chong Mek, and it does not use one of your two land entries.
Retirement, marriage and study extensions
National criteria, fee 1,900 THB. Retirement: age 50 or over, and 65,000 THB a month in income, or 800,000 THB in a Thai bank held for two months before applying and three months after approval (then not below 400,000 THB), or a combination totalling 800,000 THB. Marriage to a Thai national: 40,000 THB a month in income, or 400,000 THB in a Thai bank held for the previous two months, with both spouses attending. See the retirement extension guide.
Expect your application to be checked on the ground. Ubon's August 2026 report records officers spot-checking three student-extension applicants at a school in Mueang Ubon, a university campus in Kra Sop and Ubon Ratchathani University in Warin Chamrap, confirming each person was in Thailand for the purpose their application stated.
90-day report, re-entry permit, TM30
- 90-day report (TM.47): free. File from 15 days before to 7 days after the due date, or pay a 2,000 THB fine in person. The first report after arrival must be made in person, through someone you authorise, or by registered post; after that you can use tm47.immigration.go.th. See 90-day reporting.
- Re-entry permit (TM.8): 1,000 THB single, 3,800 THB multiple. Cross into Laos without one and your extension is cancelled. See the re-entry permit guide.

Chong Mek and the Other Lao Crossings
Chong Mek is Ubon's main crossing into Laos, in Sirindhorn district. On the Lao side is Vangtao, in Champasak province, on the road to Pakse. The Immigration Bureau's office-hours list gives these crossings under Ubon Ratchathani:

The rules when you come back in:
- Two land entries a year. Since 15 September 2026, entries on the 30-day exemption through any land border count toward a cap of two per calendar year. Nationals of Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and Singapore are excepted.
- Repeat runners can be refused. On 12 November 2025 the Immigration Bureau told all checkpoints to consider refusing entry to people who make visa runs "more than 2 rounds without a reason they can explain", and to point them to the visa that matches their real purpose.
- Entry conditions. The officer can ask for 20,000 THB per person (40,000 THB per family) and an onward ticket within your 30 days. File your TDAC at tdac.immigration.go.th within 3 days before arrival.
Applying for a Thai visa in southern Laos. Champasak, where Pakse is, falls under the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Savannakhet, not the embassy in Vientiane. It takes applications online at thaievisa.go.th from people staying in its six provinces and collects the fee in cash, in baht. Since 31 August 2026 the DTV can only be applied for where you are a national or permanent resident, so a trip across Chong Mek will not get you one. Our Laos visa run guide covers the rest.
Do You Need a Visa?
Since 15 September 2026, nationals of 60 countries and territories, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, most of Europe and India, get a 30-day visa exemption for tourism, replacing the 60-day scheme. Anyone who entered before 15 September keeps the stay they were given. Seychelles and Mauritius get 15 days; Azerbaijan, Belarus and Serbia are the only nationalities left on Visa on Arrival. At this office you can extend a 30-day exempt stay once, by up to 30 days, for 1,900 THB, reaching about 60 days in total. For longer stays you need a visa, mostly applied for at thaievisa.go.th: a Non-Immigrant O for retirement or a Thai family, or the DTV for remote work. The visa finder will narrow it down.
Practical Notes
- Book before you go. The Immigration Bureau's Division 4 appointment page has a booking calendar for "Ubon Ratchathani Immigration".
- Don't drive to Sirindhorn by mistake. Map apps may send you to the head office address. For extensions and 90-day reports, check with the foreigner-services line (045-312-133) first.
- Border hours are the Bureau's. Chong Mek's 06:00-20:00 comes from the Immigration Bureau's own list. Leave margin for the Lao side.
