The Royal Thai Embassy in Lisbon, in the Restelo district near Belém, handles Thai visas for Portuguese citizens and people with legal residence status in Portugal. Portugal is its only country; there is no Thai embassy covering Portugal from Madrid or elsewhere.
The detail that sets Lisbon apart is its residence test. The embassy accepts a Portuguese residence card or a Certificate of European Citizen from the local authority as proof. It states that the certificate of residence granted under the temporary protection regime is not accepted as proof of legal residence. If that is your only document, the embassy says an application will not be refunded.

Which Areas This Mission Covers
The embassy's e-Visa page says Portuguese citizens and those with legal residence status in Portugal may apply through Lisbon, with proof of residency. The Thai Foreign Ministry's list of mission contact points (December 2025) assigns only Portugal to Lisbon.
Two groups fall outside it:
- Portuguese citizens living abroad or already in Thailand. The embassy says they cannot apply through Lisbon and must return to Portugal first, or apply to the Thai embassy where they live.
- Residents of Spain and Andorra. They apply to the Royal Thai Embassy in Madrid.
Do You Need a Visa?
For a holiday, Portuguese citizens do not. Since 15 September 2026, Portuguese passport holders get a 30-day visa exemption for tourism.
- One extension of up to 30 days is available at a Thai immigration office for 1,900 THB. See the visa exemption extension guide.
- Carry proof of onward travel and funds of 20,000 THB per person (40,000 THB per family).
- Exemption entries over land borders are capped at twice per calendar year.
- Anyone who entered before 15 September 2026 keeps the stay they were given.
- File the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within 3 days before arrival.
A warning about the embassy's own page. Lisbon's visa page still shows the temporary 45-day exemption and visa-on-arrival lists from October 2022. Those lists no longer apply. Use the current rules: visa exemption, the 30-day change and visa on arrival (now only for Azerbaijan, Belarus and Serbia).
Residents of Portugal who hold other passports should check their own nationality with the visa finder.
How to Apply
Lisbon stopped taking visa applications in person on 21 October 2022. Since 1 November 2022, every application except the Privilege Entry Visa (Thailand Elite) goes through thaievisa.go.th.
- Create an account and choose the Royal Thai Embassy, Lisbon. One account can file up to 10 applications.
- Pick "Ordinary Passport" unless you are a government official.
- Upload your passport bio page, a photo from the last 6 months (JPG, under 3 MB) and your proof of Portuguese nationality or legal residence.
- Pay online by Visa or Mastercard. The fee is not refunded if the visa is refused or if you chose the wrong visa type.
- The approved e-Visa is emailed to you. Print it for the airline and Thai immigration.
The embassy asks you to apply at least a month ahead, but not more than 3 months. It says certain nationalities can wait up to 3 months, and it cannot handle urgent requests. It may ask for more documents at [email protected].
No O-X for Portuguese citizens. The embassy states that Portuguese nationals are not eligible for the five-year Non-Immigrant O-X, and choosing it by mistake is not refunded. Retirees usually look at the Non-Immigrant O-A or the O visa.
DTV applicants: since 31 August 2026, the Thai Foreign Ministry requires you to apply where you are a national or permanent resident and to add a criminal record certificate. A Portuguese residence card that is not permanent may not be enough. See DTV application.
Fees
The e-Visa portal shows the exact fee for your visa before you pay. The only fee list on Lisbon's site sits on the same October 2022 page as the outdated exemption lists and has no DTV fee, so we don't reproduce it here. For comparison, the Athens embassy (fee schedule of July 2024) and the Budapest embassy (fee schedule of January 2026) both charge €35 for a single-entry tourist visa and €350 for the DTV.
Practical Notes
Email first. The embassy's English site does not publish office hours or a holiday list for visitors. Visa applicants have no reason to visit anyway, since everything is online, but for legalisation or other consular matters, email [email protected] before you go.
Facebook is an official channel. The Thai Foreign Ministry's list names the embassy's Facebook page as a contact channel for visa and consular matters, alongside the two email addresses. Given how dated the website's visa page is, check there for recent notices too.
